Community Life Commission

Our Parish is known for its friendly atmosphere and we are charged with keeping the spirit of fun, involvement and friendship alive as the community grows.

BOOK CLUB
Nancy Daniels began the book club about five years ago. Parishioners met in her home for two years until she took a year off to move. By then Borders had opened in Lee’s Summit and they agreed to let the club meet in their cafe. The group has now been meeting for about two years and membership has grown to about 20 women. Watch the bulletin for information on meeting location and dates.

BRIDGE MARATHON
We play bridge as a community builder and a fundraiser September
through May, usually on the 2
nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. It is run as two continuing sessions: September through early December and then starting up anew January through early May. We play from 7 p.m. to about 10 p.m. You play with your own partner the entire evening but play 7 hands each against three different sets of opponents. We play social or party bridge, keeping a running total throughout each session. We return your cost of play to you if you are the highest scorer for any given night. We also pay prize money to the top three pairs at the end of the fall and spring sessions. The cost to play is currently $4 per night per person. If you play, you sign on for the entire session, pay, and either play or provide a substitute to play in your absence.
Since our inception in the fall of 2003, we have raised over
$7500 for the Church. If you are interested or have questions, contact Kathy Rolfe at 237-0519 or look for current information about the Marathon at her website www.KathyRolfe.com

BUNKO
About six years ago, Nancy Daniels happened to mention that she played bunko (which is a 1950's game of dice).  Fellow employees and church friends were eager to learn to play, so she started the first group of 12 ladies. Seven months later, a second group of ladies from Holy Spirit was born and a year ago, Margie Green began a third group. They all get together every November to play and use the money to help needy families.

PARISH POTLUCK LUNCH
Parishioners come together on the third Wednesday of the month, September through May, for a pot luck lunch. There are often special guests and speakers. Watch the bulletin for more details.

ROSARY MAKERS GROUP
This Group meets on the second Friday of every month and provides rosaries for missions, both in this country and abroad. Rosaries are also provided to new parishioners through welcoming baskets. If you would like to learn to make rosaries, or if you could donate old costume jewelry beads and chains, please call Barb McClung.

FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY
Financial Peace University is offered periodically by Holy Spirit. This program helps people feel empowered to take control of their money, strengthen their marriages and other relationships, and change their family trees forever. You will laugh out loud as you learn what it takes to get out of debt, how to spend your money with a purpose, keys to saving money like never before, how to invest with confidence, and so much more.

COUPLES IN COVENANT
CinC is a group for married couples to come together in faith and love to socialize with other couples that share the same values. Our group aims to cater to the family and offers childcare during most of our activities.  We offer marriage enrichment activities as well as social gatherings with a wide range of themes.

MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS (MOPS)
MOPS is a group for mother’s of newborn to kindergarten-age children to come together in faith and support to socialize with other women that are going through this same time in their life. Childcare is provided during the meetings. A number of other activities are scheduled year round to encourage socialization between moms and children. Email lsmops@sbcglobal.net for more info on any of our activities.

GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Holy Spirit Golf Tournament is held annually in August or September and for the past several years has been played on the Shamrock Hills Golf Course in southern Lee's Summit.  Following the tournament, golfers and their families gather at the Church for a dinner and awarding of prizes.  Everyone is welcome to join the fun!

OCTOBER MARKETPLACE (Craft Sale)
The Ladies Auxiliary and Quilting Group work together to put on the October Marketplace craft sale. We have around 50 exhibitors, door prizes, bakery items, lunch items and much more. This is also where we display the handmade quilt made by the quilting group. The drawing is done in the afternoon for the lucky winner. Planning for this starts in early May when we send out a mailing to potential vendors/crafters. Each year we make over 100 homemade pies to sell at the bakery. The money from this event helps to provide much needed pantry items for the entire church including paper goods such as plates, napkins, silverware, cups, etc and equipment for the kitchen. It takes many volunteers to put on such an awesome event but we all have a lot of fun doing it. Come check out what's new at the October Marketplace this year. For more information please contact the parish office for contact information.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 8334
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men’s fraternal organization whose members are dedicated to supporting their local parish and
community while developing rewarding friendships with men of similar values and character. We are committed to many activities in the areas of family, church, youth, community and council.  Our mission is to be the strong right arm of the Catholic Church and the parish priest by offering our services to support their various needs. We are ardent defenders of the right to life and strong supporters of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Council #8334 at Holy Spirit reactivated in the Spring of 2007. Our
business meeting is the first Wednesday of  every month. We sponsor many activities throughout the year including parish breakfasts, fish fry’s, rosaries, family events, youth activities, assistance with parish projects, council fundraisers, Tootsie Roll Drive and Roses for Life to name a few. We invite all Catholic men 18 years of age or older to join us as we work together to strengthen our faith, our families, our church, our community and our country.

QUILTING GROUP
Formerly called the Sewing Group, the quilting group consists of women interested in sewing/quilt making.  These ladies make the raffle quilt each year for the October  Marketplace.  They meet the fourth Thursday of each month at the church.  New members are always welcome, so bring a project to work on and come join us.

TRIVIA NIGHT
Once a year join us for this fun-filled social event. Trivia night is played with tables of six to eight people.  Tables are booked as groups and as individuals, so you do not need to be a group of six to join in the fun.  This event encompasses the community so bring your friends and neighbors.  Trivia is played with 10 questions from 10 categories.  Each category is read aloud and answered as a table.  Categories in the past have included things such as science, movies, and religion.  Prizes are awarded for the winning table.   A side competition of best table décor is also awarded a prize at the end of the night.  Each year the theme and some of the categories of trivia night change.  The theme is a secret.  Trivia night is typically played in the early winter.  Come join us for lots of fun and socializing.   Study hard and see you next year!

WELCOMING COMMITTEE
The Welcoming Committee is a group of parishioners who make a personal visit to new parishioners at their homes, and present a
welcoming basket/bag. These baskets/bags, filled with information about the church, as well as other items, are prepared by members of the office staff. The committee helps to make new people feel welcome, which is becoming more and more important as Holy Spirit Parish continues to grow larger. If you’d be interested in delivering welcoming baskets/bags, please contact David Bremer at the Parish Office.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS LADIES AUXILIARY
The Ladies Auxiliary is comprised of any and all ladies in the parish.  It is a social group and is an easy and fun way to meet other ladies in the parish  The group meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month to discuss current business, plan activities and socialize.  Following each short meeting there is either a social activity or a guest speaker from our local community.  Some of the activities that the Auxiliary organizes include Donut Sunday, October Marketplace, Chili & Cheesecake Dinner, Confirmation Reception, Taco Dinner and Family Night.  We are open to new ideas and suggestions, so please bring your ideas and come join us.  For more information please contact the parish office.
