Deacon Rich Akins
|

|
Rich Akins was ordained to the permanent
diaconate in June of 2004. He has been a member of Holy Spirit Parish
since 1981, and was received into the Roman Catholic Church from the
Episcopal faith in 1983. As a permanent deacon, his primary
responsibilities are parish ministries and a ministry to the Bishop. He
is currently involved with Ministry with People with Disabilities, Peace
and Social Justice, and ministry with the sick and dying. Service in
the community is particularly important to Rich . He believes our
calling as baptized Christians is to be Christ to the world. |

Deacons also have full time jobs in the
secular world. Rich has been employed by Pfizer Inc since 1980. Rich
received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Emporia State
University in 1979. In 1999, he began his training and education for
the diaconate, completing the New Wine course of study in 2002 and
diaconate formation in 2004. The fourth of six children, Rich is not
the first in his family to be ordained to the ministry. His father is a
permanent deacon in the Episcopal church and one of his older brothers
is a pastor in the Methodist church. |

Rich and his wife, Beth, have three children
- Sean, Shelley, and Allison. |
